Man hurt in shootout near car with off-duty Chicago police officers inside
CHICAGO - A man was shot and injured during a shootout, which involved a car carrying two off-duty Chicago police officers, early Saturday morning in the Austin neighborhood.
What we know
The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. when a car occupied by five people, including the two off-duty officers, was parked in the 1000 block of South Mayfied Avenue, police said.
A 26-year-old man got out of the car and someone in another car began shooting and hit him.
During the incident, a gun was fired from the car carrying the off-duty officers in the direction of the offender, who fled the scene.
The injured 26-year-old was taken by the four other passengers to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
Neither of the officers was injured during the shootout. No one is in custody.
What we don't know
Chicago police would not confirm if one of the off-duty officers was the person who fired at the offender.

The Investigative Response Team is also investigating the shooting.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is the city of Chicago agency that investigates police shootings and alleged misconduct involving CPD officers.
COPA is independent from the Chicago Police Department and staffed by civilian investigators.
The agency also has a role in recommending changed to CPD's policies, practices, collective bargaining agreements, programs and training.
