CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - Dozens were injured and at least five people killed in shootings over the weekend.
When an 18-year-old man was shot after an eye witness says two men emerged from an alley Saturday, a bystander, a 59-year-old man was caught in the crossfire, and the city's plague of gun violence literally fell at Jamaine Parish's front steps.
Parish said after the man was shot, he collapsed in front of his home.
Blood stains the grassy area where the man killed, whom police identify as Tayvion Roberson, fell when he was shot in the 7100 block of South Artesian Ave. in the Marquette Park neighborhood, according to police, who said the shooting happened at about 9:40 p.m.
It happened as many children were outside, and a 13-year-old, whom Fox32 is choosing not to identify for his protection, says he helped render aid to the fallen older man.
“To be a kid and to see someone dying, or be dead … I can't even explain the hurt,” the teenager said. “It scars me because I wanted to grow up into a position where I don't have to see anything like that.”
Parish said his daughter was having trouble with what she saw.
“My daughter, expressed thought tears, that 'i could have been shot.' no words,” he said.
Close to three dozen shootings since Friday have been non-fatal, and at least five others were killed as of Sunday night.
It added to a tally of violence that leaves more dead in Chicago, this year, than at the same point last year.
“As long as we continue to have a tale of two cities in Chicago, and we have abandon and neglect on the south and the west side, I don’t think the violence is going to go anywhere,” said Fr, Michael Pfleger of Saint Sabina Church.
But tallys and totals, to a child witness, mean little when compared to moments.
“He was in the wrong place in the wrong time and he got caught. That could have been us,” the teenager said.
