Oak Park police detective fatally shot, suspect in custody

An Oak Park police officer was shot and killed Friday morning.

The shooting happened around 9:36 a.m. in the 800 block of Lake Street, according to village officials.

The officer was shot in the side and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was identified as Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins.

Reddins, 40, lived in Chicago and was sworn into the Oak Park Police Department in May 2019, officials said.

The suspect was also shot in the leg.

He was taken into custody and is being treated at the same hospital.

Village officials said the suspect was seen leaving a bank with a gun prior to the shooting.

The Oak Park Police Department released this statement on Reddins' passing: 

"It is with great sadness that the Village of Oak Park announces that Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins was killed today, Nov. 29, 2024, in the line of duty while responding to a call involving an armed offender. The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence."

The West Chicago Police Department also issued a statement on the slain officer: 

"WCPD extends our condolences to Oak Park PD as they mourn the loss of one of their own. This morning, Detective Allan Reddins was shot and killed while responding to a call. Our thoughts go out to the men and women of OPPD, as well as Detective Reddins’s family and friends."
