CHICAGO - Chicago police issued an alert Tuesday after three smash-and-grab burglaries were reported at clothing stores along the Magnificent Mile and on the Near North Side earlier this month.
An apparel store in the 1800 block of North Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park was targeted in mid-November. The Canada Goose store on Michigan Avenue was hit twice.
Police said thieves use a brick or blunt object to break windows, enter stores and steal clothing. Often, they run to a getaway car that has been stolen.
It is a trend happening across the country.
In suburban Oak Brook, police released video of a group of offenders running into a store and taking merchandise.
On Good Day Chicago, Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger said the most important thing is to be vigilant.
"First, if you are near the door, leave and get out as quick as can," Kruger said. "But if you find yourself in the back of the store or a place where you can’t get to an exit, try to stay away from them. Get against the wall, out of their way. They're there to steal and leave in 30 seconds. We don't ask customers to get involved. Be aware. Women should hold their purse close to them, and if it is safe, when you’re leaving, don't put yourself in danger, if you’re able, snap pictures or video of your own, if the suspects fleeing toward the parking lot, if there is a picture of a getaway vehicle, it helps us put together a case."
Chicago police are asking anyone with information on the burglaries to contact Area Three detectives at (312) 744-8263.
