Suspect dead following officer-involved shooting in Gary: police
GARY, Ind. - A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Gary on Tuesday.
Gary police responded to the 1500 block of Chase Street for a domestic disturbance around 3 p.m. after receiving a series of 911 hang-ups.
When officers arrived, police said a woman ran out of the home and told them an armed man was inside.
According to investigators, officers saw the armed man in the doorway of the home and attempted to negotiate with him.
Gary's crisis negotiator and SWAT team were called. Negotiations with the armed individual that lasted more than 30 minutes were unsuccessful, according to officials with Indiana State Police, who are leading the investigation.

Police say the armed individual then exited the home with a firearm pointed at his head and walked toward a parked vehicle and got inside.
"Once he got into the vehicle, a sequence of events took place between the male subject that exited the house and the SWAT team that was on scene. That ultimately led to shots being fired and the suspect is now deceased," said Sgt. Glen Fifield with Indiana State Police.
At least one Gary SWAT officer fired at the suspect, according to ISP. Officials have not yet disclosed how many shots were fired, or if more than one officer fired their duty weapon.
Police also say it’s unclear at this time if the armed subject fired any shots, at himself or at officers.
No other injuries were reported.
Police say there is no threat to the public.
