Chicago weather: Temps to take a nosedive this afternoon
CHICAGO - We are hours away from the coldest air since the third week of January.
Highs today will reach 30 before the cold front rips through this afternoon. It will be cloudy with some flurries and spotty snow showers. Winds will howl this afternoon as temperatures nosedive.
Wind chills overnight through tomorrow morning will be between -10 and perhaps -20 with the coldest temps overall far north where actual low temperatures might reach zero.
Skies will clear tonight and there will be some sun tomorrow with a light snow maker pointing toward central Illinois.
Warming centers
The city of Chicago coordinates a network of more than 190 public facilities available for warming including participating Chicago Public Library locations, park district buildings, police stations, and City Colleges of Chicago facilities during business or designated hours.
All community service centers will also be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. including:
- Englewood Community Service Center - 1140 West 79th Street
- Garfield Community Service Center - 10 South Kedzie Avenue
- Dr. Martin Luther King Community Service Center - 4314 South Cottage Grove (
- North Area Community Service Center - 845 West Wilson Avenue

Thursday forecast
Highs tomorrow will be in the teens.
The next storm system looks to arrive a little later than it did earlier this week. That means that the risk of frozen precipitation on the front end is lower because temperatures will be warmer.
Weekend outlook
Rain is now favored Saturday-starting during the early morning hours. Highs will be in the low 40s.
Sunday will be milder with mid to upper 40s under mostly cloudy skies. Another rain maker is likely Monday night and Tuesday.
