Community members hold meeting as Chicago police continue to search for Rogers Park killer
Community members packed a meeting Thursday night demanding answers after unsettling violence in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.
After two murders in two days, people want the killer behind bars.
Residents in the 50th Ward are still mourning the loss of one of their own – 24-year-old Eliyahu Moscowitz.
It was another packed house at the Jewish Community Center on Touhy where police addressed citizens, again showing video of the man they believe is responsible. Police say the video shows the shooter running down an alley after killing the first victim Sunday morning. They say the suspect’s distinct walk is what makes him stand out. He's still on the loose and that has many worried.
“I think everybody is really upset about this and shaken up very saddened and a loss of life, had two losses of life,” said Alderman Debra Silverstein.
Silverstein knew Moscowitz, buying from him at the Jewel where he worked.
“He was always smiling, always happy, very willing to help, just a really nice person and a nice family,” she said.
Now the public is willing to help catch the killer. First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio says the tip lines are being flooded and many people offered help after Wednesday night's meeting.
“Thirty, forty citizens came forward with information, little bits and tips and clues. And sometimes the information may come from one individual, pieces of the story come from multiple individuals and ultimately put it together and get us to the right person,” Riccio said.
Riccio also addressed concerns that the killings may have been hate crimes.
“We don't believe that there's anyway the shooter could've known that the first individual was gay or that the second individual was Jewish. There was nothing that was obvious about either one of those things,” Riccio said. “Killing for the sake of killing. That what appears to be right now.
