3-year-old boy killed in fire in Grand Crossing neighborhood
CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - A boy died after suffering injuries in a morning fire at an apartment building on the city’s South Side.
The fire started in the 1400 block of W. 67th Pl. in Chicago’s Grand Crossing neighborhood at about 10:30, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
The boy, who died at Comer Children’s Hospital, is identified as 3-year-old Maqkwone Jones.
A firefighter was taken to Northwestern Hospital after being overheated while battling the blaze.
Randall Robinson said he was walking by when he saw the fire and went in to try to help people evacuate.
After getting no responses, that’s when he left the building. Outside, he said he saw a woman screaming that her little boy was still inside.
“I ran back in the second time but as i went back in the second time, the smoke was too much and I couldn't get to the child,” Robinson said.
“Maybe I could have done a little more. Maybe I could have done something different.”
Ashanti Andrews was returning to her home of 19 years to see that her childhood memories were erased in the fire.
She said she had picked up her grandmother from the home only minutes earlier.
“I spent my first Christmas here when I was a baby. I remember crib and Christmas trees and everything,” she said.
