Shoppers crowd stores to support local businesses
PARK RIDGE, Illinois (Fox 32 News) - Shoppers flocked to locally owned shops as part of Small Business Saturday.
"Half of everyone in Illinois, half of everyone in America works for a locally-owned small business," said Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner at a bakery in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. "They are providing jobs, creating products and developing services that drive our nation and the state of Illinois towards economic growth."
At Edie Boutique in Park Ridge, the owner said she appreciates the support of local shoppers.
"People who shop local and small are the reason that boutiques like this can thrive," said Amy Degrazio.
The U.S. Small Business Administration said that 46 percent of workers in Illinois are employed by small businesses. Shoppers said keeping those businesses alive is worth sometimes paying a few extra bucks.
"Even if you have to pay a little more, I really think it's worth it," said shopper Marsha Kowal.
"You've got to keep people in your neighborhood," said shopper Donna Krueger. "You've got to keep your neighborhood going, keep the economy going."
