Southwest resuming normal service at Midway after hundreds of cancellations

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - Southwest Airline was resuming normal operations at Midway International Airport Monday morning after more than 200 flights were canceled Sunday due to a lack of the product used to de-ice planes.

The de-icing product glycol had been replenished by Monday morning and normal operations were resuming at Midway, according to a statement from Southwest. More than 250 Southwest flights were expected to take off from the airport throughout the day.

As of 12:05 p.m., 13 flights had been canceled at Midway, and 17 more had been grounded at O’Hare International Airport, the CDA said. Travelers at both airports were experiencing delays of less than 15 minutes.

A representative for Southwest said the airline will continue to work with passengers to accommodate travel plans, noting that the company had updated its customer accommodation policies.

A winter storm hit Midway with over 13 inches of snow between Thursday and Sunday, while O’Hare recorded 12.3 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service.

The Chicago Department of Aviation’s website showed cancellations of all Southwest flights leaving Midway on Sunday as the airline waited on the delivery of more glycol.

On Sunday, there were upwards of 200 flights canceled at both Midway and O’Hare, the CDA said.
