2 brothers charged after shootout with DEA agents outside Joliet mall

Federal charges were filed Wednesday against two brothers accused of firing at federal agents.

The shooting happened Tuesday in the Louis Joliet Mall parking lot during an undercover DEA sting.

Sources say Adan and Fernando Godinez are both charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

31-year-old Adan of Morris, Illinois is also charged with discharging a firearm during drug trafficking crime. He is thought to be connected to the Mexican cartel.

Sources say he pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired at the officers. They then returned fire, striking Adan at least 4 times in the lower extremities.

36-year-old Fernando Godinez is a convicted felon and is charged with possession of a weapon. Officers found him with a 9 millimeter.

None of the officers were injured and because of their quick thinking, no civilians were injured.

Adan Godinez is still in the hospital.

If convicted, these charges could lead to 15 years or more of jail time.
