CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - Two people were killed and at least 12 others were wounded in shootings Monday across the city’s South and West sides.
The most recent homicide happened about 5:15 p.m. in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
Raheem Gray, 34, was in the 3600 block of West 13th Street when another male walked up and shot him several times before running off east on 13th Street, then south on Central Park, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Gray, of the 3600 block of West Douglas, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:47 p.m., authorities said.
Earlier Monday, a man was taken into custody after a woman was shot to death during a domestic dispute in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Officers responding about 12:30 a.m. to a call of a person shot at a home in the 100 block of West 112th Place found 35-year-old Otha M. Mooney with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
Mooney, who lived in the home, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:55 a.m., the medical examiner’s office said.
Police said the shooting is domestic-related and a 43-year-old man has been taken into custody. Charges were pending Monday.
The latest nonfatal shooting left a 21-year-old man wounded in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. At 11:56 p.m., he was walking in the 2900 block of West Walnut when someone walked up, fired shots, then ran away, police said. The man was shot in the hand and leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At 10:11 p.m., two teenage boys were wounded in an Austin neighborhood shooting on the West Side. The boys, ages 15 and 16, were standing outside in the 5500 block of West Quincy when they heard gunfire and realized they’d both been shot, police said. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital. The younger boy was shot in the back and had his condition stabilized, while the older boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was listed in critical condition.
About an hour earlier, two men were shot in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side. The men, ages 28 and 32, were standing in a gangway at 9:08 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Wabash when someone fired shots, striking them, according to police. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital. The younger man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was listed in critical condition, while the older man was shot twice in the arm and listed in fair condition.
About 8:55 p.m., a 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. He was sitting in a vehicle with another person in the 8000 block of South May when a gunman got into the back seat and shot the man in the back of the head, police said. The shooter then tried to drive away in the vehicle, but the other person pulled him out and drove the victim to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. The witness was being uncooperative with investigators. A police source said the victim is a documented gang member and the shooting appeared to be gang-related.
Shortly before 7 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 2400 block of West 47th Place in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. The man took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.
About noon, two men were shot in the South Side Englewood neighborhood. They were sitting on a porch in the 5600 block of South Morgan when a male walked up and started firing shots, police said. A 26-year-old man was shot in the hand, and a 19-year-old man was shot in the left side of the back. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, where the older man was listed in good condition and the younger man in serious condition. A police source said both victims are documented gang members.
At 10:26 a.m., a 21-year-old man was wounded in a South Shore neighborhood shooting. He was in the 7800 block of South Essex when a gray vehicle approached and a male got out and fired shots, police said. He was shot in the left leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized. Police said the shooting appeared to be gang-related.
Earlier Monday, a 19-year-old was outside about 1:45 a.m. in Austin’s 5200 block of West Washington when someone in black clothing walked up and opened fire, striking the man in the right leg and right hand, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said, adding that the man is a documented gang member.
Monday’s first shooting occurred in Washington Park. A 29-year-old woman was sitting on a porch about 12:15 p.m. in the 200 block of East 60th Street when shots rang out and she was struck, police said. She suffered a graze wound to the right ankle and refused medical attention.
