2 charged in shooting of armored car drivers in Chatham

Two men have been charged in connection to a robbery and shooting that killed an armored car driver and critically wounded another in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood Monday morning.

"This brazen attack occurred in the morning, in the daylight hours, as part of a murderous spree," said Supt. David Brown during a news conference Tuesday. 

The shooting happened about 10:19 a.m. at a Bank of America in the 200 block of West 83rd Street, the Chicago Police Department said.

The drivers with GARDA World security services were loading an ATM machine when the offenders arrived in a dark-colored vehicle.

Three occupants exited the vehicle. Two of the occupants had handguns and one had a rifle.

CPD update on shooting of armored car drivers

Two people have been charged with the fatal shooting of an armored car driver in Chatham.

The three offenders approached the guards and a gun battle ensued, authorities said.

Armored car driver LaShonda Hearts, 47, was shot six times and was in "traumatic arrest" when paramedics arrived. She later succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Another guard was shot in his lower extremities and was listed in critical condition.

A third guard was not hit and returned fire. No offender was struck at that time, police said.

The offenders then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.

At 10 a.m., the offenders' vehicle was captured on private video cameras entering a strip mall in the 6700 block of South Stony Island, police said.

The vehicle parked and one of the offenders got out of the vehicle and entered a store.

The offender was wearing the same clothing as captured on video during the attempted robbery and fatal shooting of the armored truck driver, police said.

While inside the store, the offender brandished handguns and announced a robbery.

A customer got on the ground, while the clerk complied with the offender's demands.

The offender then grabbed several cell phones and exited the store. 

At about 11:30 a.m., officers responded to a traffic accident in the 8700 block of South Saginaw, police said.

Upon arrival, a vehicle had struck several parked vehicles and a tree. There were two occupants inside the vehicle, and both had suffered gunshot wounds. They both died from their injuries, police said.

2 charged in shooting death of armored car driver

Two men have been charged in connection to a robbery and shooting that killed an armored car driver and critically wounded another in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood Monday morning.

At this time, police believe the two victims in the vehicle were also involved in the robbery and shooting of the armored car drivers.

Numerous cell phones were inside and outside of the vehicle. The cell phones were ones that had been taken from the Boost Mobile a short time before, police said.

A 911 caller then informed dispatch that two individuals ran into a residence in the 8700 block of South Saginaw.

Officers on scene surrounded the home while SWAT was called.

Occupants from the house came outside and surrendered to police. Several were taken into custody.

Handguns and a rifle were recovered from the home, police said.

Shortly after, charges were approved for two offenders.

Antwon Montgomery, 19, and Deandre Jennings, 20, have been charged with first-degree murder for the killing of LaShonda Hearts.

Montgomery and Jennings also face two counts of attempted first-degree murder charges for Hearts' partner, a 46-year-old male security guard.

Additionally, Jennings and Montgomery face attempted armed robbery charges in relation to the same incident Supt. Brown said.

Montgomery and Jennings are also charged with first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery in regards to the double homicide that occurred in the 8700 block of South Saginaw.

Montgomery is also being charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of unlawful restraint for robbing a Boost Mobile store in the 6700 block of South Stony Island.

Armored guards shot in Chicago ATM ambush, 1 killed
