Americans are no strangers to hard work and while it is admirable to have a strong work ethic, a new study is highlighting states where people are going the extra mile on their jobs, leaving little free time for themselves.

WalletHub released a recent report ranking the "hardest-working states" in 2024.

To determine where the hardest-working Americans reside, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key dimensions: "Direct work factors" and "indirect work factors."

WalletHub examined those two categories along with 10 metrics, ranging from average workweek hours to the share of workers with multiple jobs to the average leisure time spent per day. These states were graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the "hardest-working."

The team then determined each state’s average across the metrics to calculate an overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order the states.
