SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago alderman challenging U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush contends the 12-term Democrat submitted fewer than 60 percent of the valid signatures he needs to be on the March primary ballot.
Howard Brookins Jr. said in a statement Tuesday he is confident officials "will find enough evidence" to boot Rush from the ballot. He contends a review of Rush's signatures shows irregularities.
Brendan Shiller is attorney for Rush's campaign. He calls the challenge "frivolous."
Rush is a Chicagoan who has served in Congress since 1993.
Crain's Chicago Business reports that petition challenges have been filed against Democratic U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Napolean Harris, a state senator.
A spokeswoman for Kelly says the challenge has no merit. A Harris campaign aide did not respond.
