Calumet City alderwoman speaks on death threats made against her and son

Calumet City Ald. Monet Wilson addressed the public Thursday night regarding sexual assault and death threats made towards her and her minor son.

Calumet City Ald. Monet Wilson addressed the public on Thursday night regarding sexual assault and death threats made towards her and her minor son.

The 2nd Ward alderwoman spoke during the scheduled City Council meeting at Calumet City Hall.

Wilson shared her experiences, outlined the toll these threats have taken on her family and proposed a call to action for enhanced safety measures for public officials and their families.

"These heinous acts are not only an attack on my family but an affront to the democratic institutions that protect us all," Wilson said in a statement.

During her address, Wilson urged local authorities and justice departments to take action to prevent violence and intimidation. She also presented a community action plan to combat threats against public servants and called for collective support from residents.

A spokesperson for the City of Calumet City released the following statement:

It's unfortunate that as serious as these allegations are, the elected Alderwoman of the 2nd ward chose not to file an official police report or complaint with the Calumet City Police Department, Cook County Sheriff, or the Illinois State Police Department. The mayor and Chief Kolosh were first informed of these allegations by members of the media today.
If the Alderwoman’s undertone is that throughout this current election cycle that the mayor and police chief have condoned or allowed such activity to occur, that is clearly baseless and without merit. The Mayor and the Police Chief condemn any such behavior regardless of politics, an election cycle, or any other event.

It is also unfortunate that the mayor has been constantly at his wife’s side while she battles a very serious health condition. Even tonight, the mayor is at his wife’s bedside providing the necessary support that she and his family needs at this time. The First Lady’s condition is very serious and he refuses to leave her side at this time to defend himself or the city against an allegation that is being first told tonight and has not been properly reported to authorities. He has informed the police Chief to confer with Alderwoman Wilson and have the proper complaint filed this evening.
