CASEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting death of a southwestern Illinois police officer found in his squad car as an apparent suicide.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 48-year-old Caseyville Sergeant Scott Miller died while on duty Thursday from a gunshot wound to the head.
Illinois State Police Captain James Morrisey said Friday that evidence indicates Miller took his own life.
Miller was previously the village's interim police chief after longtime Chief J.D. Roth killed himself in 2013 amid a federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Department investigation.
Caseyville's village hall closed early Thursday, its flag lowered in Miller's memory.
A Saturday event in Caseyville to honor police officers as part of the statewide "Paint the Town Blue" effort remains scheduled. It was initially postponed following Miller's death.
