CHICAGO - The Salvation Army and Chicago Bears are hosting multiple meals for our new neighbors.
This week will be filled with food, fun and fellowship as the city welcomes hundreds of migrants who now call Chicago home.
LaVillita Corps, Temple Corps, Freedom Center and Irving Park Corps will each host the migrants with a meal sponsored by the Chicago Bears.
Traditional Venezuelan cuisine will be catered by Rica Arepa Chicago, including Yuca Frita, Tequenos, plantains, beef, chicken and rice. A total of 800 meals will be distributed over the next two days.
Alex, a Venezuelan national who traveled to Chicago for a better life, is currently sleeping on a police station floor where he’s been living for two weeks.
"He is so thankful for the help he's received here. When they are on the way here he dealt with racism and the people didn't like them, but not here people have been welcoming," said Alex's translator.
The Salvation Army picked up two busloads of migrants from police stations and brought them to the Freedom Center in Humboldt Park for a traditional Venezuelan meal.
The Chicago Bears covered the cost of the food.
