CHICAGO - The Chicago Board of Education has approved a resolution for Chicago Public Schools to adopt five of seven Acero schools, transitioning by fall 2026.
Friday's meeting included a moment of celebration, marking a victory for families of Acero Charter Schools.
All seven schools were at risk of closing in June 2025, which would have affected 2,000 students.
Acero previously attributed the closures to low enrollment, tight budgets, and aging facilities.
Last month, the board unanimously passed a resolution supporting charter school families impacted by the planned closures. While the resolution did not guarantee that the Acero schools would remain open beyond this academic year, it gave parents hope.
The resolution required Acero representatives to testify before the board to explain the decision to close the seven schools. It also mandated discussions between Acero and CPS to explore alternatives to the closures.
Further details on Friday's resolution have not been released. More updates will follow as they become available.
