Arrest made after child killed, pregnant woman hurt in domestic violence incident

A suspect with a long history of domestic violence, who was just released from prison on Tuesday, is back behind bars. Chicago police say he broke into a home in West Edgewater Wednesday morning, stabbing an 11-year-old boy who later died and his pregnant mother who remains in critical condition.

A suspect with a long history of domestic violence, who was just released from prison on Tuesday, is back behind bars.

Chicago police say he broke into a home in West Edgewater Wednesday morning, stabbing an 11-year-old boy who later died and his pregnant mother who remains in critical condition.

Police were called to the home in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue around 8 a.m. for an apparent domestic violence confrontation.

Residents who live in the building say they heard screaming and cries for help. When officers arrived, they found a 33-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds and her 11-year-old son suffered an injury to the chest.

They were both transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where the boy was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Jayden Perkins, and his death has been ruled a homicide.

The woman was listed in critical condition. She is reportedly eight months pregnant with a baby girl.

"She's a lovely woman. She had lovely children, well-mannered. Her son… he was a great child. They sometimes came around, he and my daughter, they play in the years together," one neighbor said.

On Wednesday afternoon, police took the suspect, a 37-year-old man, into custody who has a long criminal record for domestic violence and violating orders of protection. His identity hasn't been released.

According to court records, in 2015, the suspect attacked the same woman just four days after she broke off their dating relationship. He was released from the Statesville Correctional Center on Tuesday after serving about seven years.

Now, he is awaiting new charges.

Her fiancé spoke with Placko and expressed frustration, saying she was worried about the suspect being released.

The victim and her two sons lived in a first-floor unit of Peterson Plaza Apartments. The younger child, who is 5 years old, was not injured.

Editor's Note: Alderman Andre Vasquez initially reported that the child was 10 years old.
