CHICAGO - A Chicago grandmother and her grandson were celebrated with some Christmas Eve surprises after losing their daughter and mother in a July 4th mass shooting.
The surprise came in two parts thanks to the collaboration of Early Walker with Vehicle Management Solutions, the Chicago Police Department, and Walmart.
It started with a shopping spree for 9-year-old Jacoby, who picked out everything from a new bike to video games and more. Jacoby witnessed his mother's death on July 4th in a mass shooting. Capri Edwards was 24 years old and was killed while she was shielding her one-year-old child.
Jacoby was shot in the face but survived. His grandmother, Markita Scott, is now raising him as she grieves the loss of her daughter.
Markita talked about how her daughter would have reacted to Tuesday’s surprises.
"She probably [would] smile and say, ‘Mom’ because that was her favorite thing. So I know she's smiling down like okay, people do care," Markita said.
But the shopping spree wasn't the only surprise. Markita was also gifted a new car.
This new car will allow the grandmother to take Jacoby to school and his counseling sessions that he's needed after witnessing the shooting.
