'I pray for peace in our communities': Mother of Aréanah Preston honors her daughter

The family of fallen Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston were a united front at her funeral Wednesday morning. Dionne Mhoon said her daughter Aréanah was an angel on loan and her life touched so many people even at such a young age.

Chicago police, family and the community gathered together to celebrate what would have been fallen Officer Aréanah Preston's 25th birthday Wednesday. 

Just days before her graduation with a master's degree in jurisprudence from the School of Law at Loyola University, Officer Preston was gunned down in her front yard in Avalon Park

Community celebrates what would have been fallen Officer Aréanah Preston's 25th birthday. 

Preston was just getting off her shift in the early hours of May 6 when she was killed. 

Since her death, the community has rallied behind her honoring her memory

"On what would have been her 25th birthday, we honored our fallen hero, Officer Aréanah Preston. We celebrated her life yesterday and we will hold the memory of her legacy in our hearts forever," the Chicago Police Department said on Twitter.

New developments in the murder of Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston

An Indiana man is facing a gun charge as a result of a federal investigation that played out after this month’s killing of Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston.

Wednesday, family and friends embraced each other as they remembered her legacy and celebrated a young life.

Interim Superintendent Fred L. Waller said, "Preston's legacy will never be forgotten."

Four teenagers have been charged in connection to the young officer's death.
