Chicago police officer injured in car crash, person shot in officer-involved incident

A Chicago police officer was injured in a car crash on the way to responding to an officer-involved shooting. One person was injured in the shooting.

A suspect was shot by Chicago police in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday night.

At about 6:45 p.m., Chicago police officers were conducting a narcotics investigation in the 2400 Block of East 72nd Street when the suspect fled on foot.

The suspect then turned and discharged a firearm toward officers. 

An officer returned fire, striking the offender to the left side of the body, police said.

The offender was transported to an area hospital, where he was initially reported in critical condition. 

No officers were injured. 

A weapon and suspected narcotics were recovered at the scene, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
