Chicago suburbs embrace a drier future with flood control projects

Some Chicago suburbs are taking proactive steps towards a drier future as the first of two major flood control initiatives was inaugurated on Friday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in Bellwood on Friday, marking a significant milestone in flood control efforts across several Chicago suburbs.

The occasion celebrated the commencement of the Addison Creek Reservoir project. This endeavor, in combination with the enhancements planned for the Addison Creek channel, is set to be concluded in 2026.

The projects directly benefit Bellwood, Stone Park, Melrose Park, Westchester, Broadview, and Northlake.

In attendance were state officials, including the mayors of these towns and Congressman Chuy Garcia.

"Anybody who's had to clean their basements, throw out valuables after every 100-year storm that takes place every three years, you know what a big day today is," said Chris Welch, Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives.

Upon completion of the projects, approximately 2,200 structures will be at a reduced risk for overbank flooding, and 1,700 buildings will no longer be in the floodplain.

Additionally, insurance rates for residents along the creek are expected to decrease.
