Search for driver in deadly Uptown hit-and-run underway

A 69-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while using a crosswalk on Broadway Avenue in Uptown Tuesday night. Chicago police are searching for a black sedan with front-end damage.

A 69-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Uptown Tuesday night. 

The victim was walking in a crosswalk in the 5100 block of North Broadway Avenue around 10:35 p.m. when she was struck, according to Chicago police.

The vehicle involved was believed to be black, possibly a Honda sedan, with front-end damage. It was last seen traveling northbound on Broadway from West Winona Street. 

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Soyfa Athamanah. She was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center shortly after the crash.

The hit-and-run was witnessed by Sun-Times photographer Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere, who said it did not appear the driver of Honda attempted to stop.

"I didn’t see brake lights," he said. "I saw him swerve and speed up a bit," LaRiviere said. "She then flew into the air."

LaRiviere said the Honda, heading north, swerved again and he thought the driver was going to stop but he did not.

She lived in the 4400 block of North Wolcott Avenue in Lincoln Square, the office said.

No arrests have been announced.
