CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - A 22-year-old man who claimed he was shot during a robbery less than a block from Navy Pier early Saturday actually shot himself, according to Chicago Police.
The man initially told investigators he was walking down the street in the 600 block of East Illinois when a suspect walked up with a handgun and announced a robbery, police said. The man told police he refused to comply with the suspect and then was shot in the leg.
After reviewing evidence and surveillance footage, police determined the man had actually shot himself, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet posted Saturday afternoon.
He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand, is less than a block away from where the shooting occurred. Jon Kaplan, a spokesman for Navy Pier, said the pier was closed at the time and the incident did not occur at the pier itself.
