Shooting erupts in Walmart parking lot during armored truck money exchange

There were more than a dozen FBI agents as crime tape surrounded a Walmart parking lot in the south suburbs on Monday.

The FBI is investigating two separate shootings that unfolded Monday morning in Chicago's south suburbs.

One of the incidents occurred around 10:30 a.m. at a Walmart store located near 167th & Pulaski. The scene was cordoned off with police tape, and the parking lot was marked with evidence markers. Two vehicles of particular interest were identified — an armored Loomis truck and another car with extensive front-end damage.

Walmart employees told FOX 32 they had heard gunshots and witnessed shoppers scrambling for cover as the chaos erupted.

According to the FBI, armored agents were engaged in a money exchange operation when multiple suspects pulled up and began shooting. In response, the agents fired back and a Walmart security guard also discharged his weapon.

The suspects then carjacked an older individual before fleeing the scene.

Meanwhile, around the same time, less than five miles away from the Walmart, federal agents responded to a robbery at US Bank, located at 4350 Lincoln Highway in Matteson. Authorities say shots were also fire during this incident.

At this point, it remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

The FBI has offered a reward of $20,000 for any information that assists in the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspects involved. Authorities have strong reason to believe that the suspects in both cases sustained injuries during the confrontations.
