WINNETKA, Ill. - A somber cloud hung over Winnetka on Tuesday as the family of 18-year-old Ebrahim Akhoon faced an agonizing ordeal. The young man had ventured into Lake Michigan during the early morning hours and has yet to be located.
Search efforts led by divers encountered treacherous weather conditions, forcing a suspension of operations earlier in the day. The search continued Wednesday morning.
Described as both talented and kind, Akhoon's disappearance has left his family in a state of shock. Nearly 24 hours have elapsed since he was last seen.
The events unfolded when Akhoon, along with two friends, went for a swim at Elder Beach around 2 a.m. According to Winnetka officials, he was suddenly pulled underwater and failed to resurface.
Akhoon's mother said her son had jumped from a pier and hit his head. Despite efforts by his friends to rescue him, they lost their grip when trying to pull him to safety.

The beach was closed for the day to allow authorities to investigate. The US Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and water rescue teams to search throughout the early morning hours. Unfortunately, these efforts were hindered by strong winds and turbulent waves, impacting search and rescue operations.
At noon, the Coast Guard postponed the search.
One neighbor expressed heartbreak and called for enhanced surveillance at the beach.
Meanwhile, a beach hazard alert is in effect until 11 p.m., as high waves, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected. Folks are advised to remain out of the water and off the pier.
