Multiple flights canceled, temporary ground stop issued at Midway Airport

Dense fog has led to several flight cancellations and delays on Sunday at Midway International Airport for holiday travelers.

Dense fog led to several flight cancellations and delays on Sunday at Midway International Airport for holiday travelers.

On Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary ground stop for some Southwest Airlines departures to Midway until 7:30 p.m.

During the early morning hours, Southwest issued a statement saying that the fog caused limited visibility and prevented inbound aircraft from landing at Midway.

This led to an influx of flights being canceled and delays, which continued throughout the day.

Pastor Stevie Powell said he had to preach Sunday morning and was en route to Atlanta to visit his grandchildren when he got stuck at the airport.

"I'm relaxing and taking deep breaths. I'm just taking it as I can," Powell said.

Gina Deangelas' flight to California was delayed twice.

"I've been waiting two hours, trying to find a different flight," she said.

Jasper High School's orchestra from Plano, Texas was in town since Friday participating in an international conference.

The group, including 40 students, spent 12 hours at Midway on Saturday after their flight home was canceled.
Orchestra director Matt Moreno said hopefully they'll fly out by 9 p.m. and be home for Christmas.
