Police search for suspect who escaped custody near Elmhurst golf course

Authorities in west suburban Elmhurst are searching for a suspect who escaped Thursday afternoon near the Eisenhower Expressway.

Authorities in Elmhurst are searching for a suspect who escaped police custody Thursday afternoon on the Eisenhower Expressway – and possibly fled onto the Columbus Park Golf Course in the city’s Austin neighborhood.

Devin M. Revels, 27, broke free from an Elmhurst police squad at approximately 2:01 p.m. along westbound I-290 near the Austin Avenue exit, according to Elmhurst police.

"Prisoner in the backseat of a squad car is combative," an officer said over the police scanner. "Subject fled on foot, subject fled on foot."

Earlier Thursday, Revels – who had an outstanding warrant – and another suspect were arrested near Cicero and Erie streets in Chicago for allegedly stealing catalytic converters in DuPage County.

While being taken back to DuPage County for processing, Revels allegedly kicked out the back window of the squad car, managed to escape, and ran from police.

The transporting officer lost sight of him after he fled into the woods along the south side of the Columbus Park Golf Course, police said.

Revels was described by police as a Black male, 5-foot-11, 160 pounds with a face tattoo. He was last seen wearing a tan shirt and was handcuffed.

"When we got here we saw these police cars in the parking lot, and we thought, ‘that’s strange.’ We got out of the car, we see like four helicopters surrounding us and we learn that there’s an escaped prisoner. We’re like, wow, on the course?" said Henry Reiland, who is on the Whitney Young Magnet High School Golf Team.

Elmhurst and Chicago police were involved in the search along with police K-9s and a helicopter, police said.

The ordeal came as a shock to golfers at the Columbus Park Golf Course.

"Jumped out of a car with handcuffs, I’m like how!?" said Mark Sanders, who was playing a round of golf Thursday afternoon.

"I mean, it was crazy to see all the helicopters, all the police cars, all the dogs," said Avi Jerath, who plays golf for Water Payton College Prep High School.

Golfers were delayed but still played Thursday, despite the lengthy search on-foot and in the air for the handcuffed suspect.

"I hope they catch the guy," said Sanders.

Anyone with information about Revels' whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.

Revels has a lengthy criminal record in Cook County that includes aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, multiple domestic violence charges and possession of a substance.
