Chicago police should have dispersed Englewood gathering before 5 were shot, top cop says

Chicago’s top cop said Wednesday that police should have dispersed a large street gathering in Englewood in the hours before five people were shot, one fatally, and a man was beaten.

One person was killed, another man was beaten, and at least four others were wounded by gunfire in Englewood Wednesday morning, according to Chicago police.

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:47 a.m. near West 56th Street and South Ada Street where a group of people were reportedly gathered for a 4th of July celebration.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the chest and was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced.

One victim, a 21-year-old man, suffered injuries to his head when he was beaten, according to police. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Chicago sees improvement in holiday weekend violence, but Englewood mass shooting mars celebration

It’s traditionally one of the most violent weekends in the city of Chicago. And while they were still plenty of shootings and murders over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Chicago police said compared to last year, there was also significant improvement.

Another victim, a 23-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

Police say a 27-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition. 

A 21-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and also taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition. 

The last known victim was a 29-year-old man who was shot in the left foot and left leg. He was also transported University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition. 

Police continue to investigate what led up to the shooting. No suspects are in custody.
