CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - On Monday, the United States stopped to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In Chicago, an annual breakfast hosted by Reverend Jesse Jackson was held to remember the civil rights leader.
The 26th annual MLK Breakfast "Keepers of the Flame" event is hosted by Push Excel at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. At the event, some very lucky students received scholarships in Martin Luther King's honor.
U.S. Senate candidate Andrea Zopp was scheduled to attend the event.
And while scholarships are being handed out at the Hyatt, Governor Bruce Rauner got his hands dirty for MLK Day. The Governor was scheduled to do some restoration work on Kelly High School and Brighton Park Elementary. It is part of the state's day of service to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a Chicago church that hosted sermons by King — Stone Temple Baptist Church — would be considered for designation as an official landmark. Emanuel's office says a commission will take up a preliminary recommendation Feb. 4.
