Freezing drizzle made roads dangerous across Chicago area Saturday night
Crashes on icy roads were reported all over Chicago and the suburbs on Saturday night.
CHICAGO - Freezing drizzle and light freezing rain made travel treacherous across the Chicago area on Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service said that the freezing drizzle started in most areas between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and will continue until about 10 p.m. Parking lots, sidewalks, and roads were slippery.
The Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said around 5:30 Saturday night that "cars are reportedly crashing like ‘ping-pong balls’ at crash scenes. Once one vehicle crashes, it's resulting in secondary crashes at the same location… Troopers are investigating numerous crashes and several have been rollovers. I-80 & I-65 are littered with crashes."
The National Weather Service said on Saturday afternoon they had heard of "numerous" car accidents across central Illinois as the freezing drizzle moved north.
In response, the City of Chicago deployed 211 salt spreaders on to Chicago's arterial routes and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
