Five students are in custody after Highland Park High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning for reports of a student "potentially in possession of a gun."

A heavy police presence formed around 10:30 a.m. at the high school located at 433 Vine Ave. after Township High School District 113 received an anonymous tip that a student was in possession of a gun, Supt. Bruce Law said in a statement.

As officers were investigating the tip, a student came forward and said they had seen a student with a gun, Law said.

Lockdown lifted at Highland Park High School after report of student with gun

Five Highland Park High School students were arrested after the campus was placed on lockdown for a couple of hours Tuesday morning due to a report of a student with a gun.

The student who allegedly had the gun was identified and security footage showed he and another student had left the building, officials said.

Law enforcement then searched the building and two students were arrested, Law said. In all, five students were arrested and the lockdown was lifted about an hour and a half later, city officials said.

"The scene has been secured and law enforcement has confirmed that there is no credible reason to continue the lockdown at Highland Park High School," the statement said.

Lockdowns were also lifted at other public buildings and schools such as City of Highland Park buildings, District 112 schools, District 113 schools, the Park District of Highland Park, and the Highland Park Public Library.

Highland Park police will continue to investigate the incident along with Township High School District 113.

Nine months ago, the Highland Park community was devastated by a mass shooting during the Fourth of July parade. The attack killed seven people and wounded 30 others.
