CHICAGO - A police chase that began in Indiana ended in Chicago on Tuesday with the arrest of a 26-year-old Illinois man who allegedly fled from officers with a 4-year-old child inside his vehicle.
The incident began just after 5 p.m. when Highland police tried pulling over a black BMW in Hammond as part of a joint law enforcement operation. The driver, however, refused to stop.
The suspect fled on Torrence Avenue before entering I-94 westbound into Illinois, eventually reaching Chicago.
Police performed a PIT maneuver near 53rd Street and Morgan, bringing the vehicle to a halt. The driver allegedly exited the car and fled on foot, leaving the 4-year-old child behind. Officers then used a Taser to subdue and take the man into custody.
Authorities said the child was checked by paramedics at the scene and released to relatives.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing, reckless endangerment of a child, and marijuana possession. After being medically cleared, he was taken to a Chicago correctional facility and is awaiting extradition to Indiana.
