CHICAGO - The inbound Kennedy and Edens expressways are now fully reopened.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) made the announcement Sunday morning, stating that after a series of weekend closures to remove barricades and other construction equipment, lanes and ramps have fully reopened.
The reversible express lanes are also resuming normal operations.
Initially, IDOT said the inbound Kennedy and Edens expressways would be fully reopened by Tuesday morning. However, the scheduled reopening was moved up to Sunday.
The reopening of the inbound lanes ends the first year of a three-year project.
IDOT says the estimated $150 million project will rehabilitate 36 bridges and the Reversible Lane Access Control system, replace overhead sign structures, install new signage and modernized LED lights and patch pavement.
The project is designed to improve safety, traffic flow and reliability for those who use the expressway each day.
The Kennedy Expressway officially opened in November 1960, and the last major rehabilitation was completed in 1994.
