Man fatally shot during shift change at Camaco in Portage, suspect in custody

A suspect is in custody after an Indiana man was fatally shot during a shift change at a Portage business early Wednesday.

A person has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a man during a shift change at a Portage business early Wednesday morning.

Police identified the victim as 22-year-old Lenell D. Jenkins, of Burns Harbor.

According to the Portage Police Department, the shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. outside Camaco, which is located at 6515 Ameriplex Drive. Jenkins was found in the employee parking lot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators that an argument broke out between Jenkins and the suspect – later identified as 20-year-old Lupe O. McGee Jr. – moments before the shooting. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

McGee was located around 9:30 a.m. at a residence on West 62nd Place in Merrillville, where he was arrested without incident. A handgun believed to have been used in the homicide was also recovered from the home.

McGee was charged with murder and is being held at the Porter County Jail without bond, awaiting his first court appearance.

"We extend our condolences to Mr. Jenkins’ family, and we hope this arrest brings a sense of relief and justice to them," Portage police said in a statement.
