SWAT standoff in Johnsburg ends with suspect in custody

A man was arrested following a 9-hour SWAT standoff outside a home in Johnsburg. Police were able to negotiate with the man who was armed and believed to be having a mental health crisis. He was taken to the hospital; police say charges are pending.

A suspect is in custody following a SWAT standoff in Johnsburg Wednesday morning. 

Johnsburg police said officers responded to the 3600 block of Fillmore Road at 11:08 p.m. Tuesday for a man shooting a gun inside a house. 

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office and SWAT assisted with the situation, which was treated as a mental health incident. 

Johnsburg Chief of Police Jason Greenwald provided an update just after 9 a.m. on the situation. He said the man barricaded himself in his house with his wife also inside. 

The suspect was identified as Timothy Mumford of 3612 Fillmore Road. Mumford's wife was safely escorted out od the home by McHenry County SWAT officers. 

Officers attempted to negotiate with Mumford, but he became less cooperative as the morning went on. He was eventually taken into custody at 8 a.m.

Johnsburg SWAT standoff ends with suspect in custody

A man is in custody following a SWAT standoff in McHenry County Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. The Johnsburg chief of police says charges are pending and the community shelter in place has been lifted.

Residents were asked to shelter in place and to avoid the area. Classes were canceled at Johnsburg School District 12 schools due to the incident which remains ongoing. 

Police say the shelter in place has since been lifted and there is no threat to the public.

Mumford was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and reckless conduct.
