Chicago leaders push to bolster public safety amid crime wave

Chicago's leaders are looking for new ways to fight crime. This, as more than 30 people were shot over the weekend in two dozen incidents, and five people were killed.

An off-duty Chicago cop was shot during a verbal altercation in Beverly early Saturday.

The incident occurred near a bar in the 2400 block of West 104th Street, police said.

At about 2:30 a.m., the 31-year-old man was in a verbal altercation with an unknown male suspect, police said.

Multiple shots were fired, and the off-duty cop was struck in the back.

The officer was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in fair condition.

No suspect is currently in custody.

Area Two detectives were investigating.
