CHICAGO - Police are pursuing “very strong leads” after a man was pushed onto CTA tracks Tuesday evening and fatally struck by a train in the Loop, interim Supt. Charlie Beck said Wednesday in an unrelated news conference.
The attack happened about 5:13 p.m. on the platform of the Red Line Jackson station in the 200 block of South State Street, Chicago police said.
Three suspects were arguing with the man when one of them pushed him onto the tracks, police said.
The 29-year-old was struck by a train and pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
He was identified as Mamadou M. Balde, 29, of West Rogers Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The suspects escaped and have not been arrested, according to police, who said the attack was captured by CTA video surveillance.
Beck said, “We have some very strong leads,” but declined to comment further on the ongoing homicide investigation.
Red Line trains were rerouted between the Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown stops for about three hours, the CTA said.
This is the second homicide at the Jackson station this year.
In February, a man died and two others were wounded in an “execution style” shooting in the pedestrian tunnel connecting the Jackson station to the Blue Line. Days earlier, a street musician was stabbed on the station’s platform.
