Michigan man charged with crashing stolen school bus in Grand Crossing
CHICAGO - A Michigan man was charged Wednesday with crashing a stolen school bus in Grand Crossing on the South Side.
David Knapp, of Niles, Michigan, was arrested about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday after a joyride that ended when he crashed into the median in the 7300 block of South Stony Island Avenue, Chicago police said.
Police said Knapp had tried to turn into an alley at 73rd Street and Blackstone Avenue but got stuck in the snow, and struck a parked 2013 Volkswagen when he tried to back out.
Knapp, 49, then changed gears and drove the bus forward through the alley, striking a fence before ending up in the median on Stony Island Avenue, according to police.
Knapp was charged with one misdemeanor count each of driving under the influence of a drug and leaving the scene.
It was not immediately clear how he came to be in possession of the bus.
