A man shot by police is speaking out publicly for the first time after an investigating agency found the shooting unjustified.

Antwon Golatte has been accused of being a cop killer after an incident in February of 2015. He was shot three times and has claimed his innocence since day one.

“When I saw them, I knew that my life was in danger, it wasn’t a shadow of a doubt,” said Golatte.

Now, he walks around with constant reminders of being the target of police officers with scars from bullet wounds on his torso.

He was shot in the chest and stomach as he fled from officers trying to pull him over during a narcotics investigation. Police alleged he was trying to run them over and they opened fire on his SUV.

After investigating, the Independent Police Review Authority calls the police-involved shooting unjustified, the use of deadly force unreasonable and that Golatte posed no immediate threat.

“I want them to step down because they knew they were wrong,” said Golatte. “I want them off the force.”

Chris Stewart, his attorney, says this case can become an example for the nation of justice served after a police-involved shooting.

“I think that the current findings of the IPRA can show a blueprint of how all of the agencies should be investigating and handling these matters,” said Stewart.

Golatte is still facing criminal charges including aggravated assault against an officer. His attorneys are hoping those will now be dropped.

A spokesperson for State's Attorney Anita Alvarez says those charges are still pending and there is insufficient evidence to charge the officers involved.
