3 horses, pony die in barn fire in Chicago’s Northwest suburbs

Three horses and a pony were killed after a barn in far northwest McHenry County was engulfed in flames early Tuesday morning.

Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts crews were sent to the reported fire in the 10800 block of Carls Road around 3 a.m. in unincorporated Marengo, according to a news release.

Crews found the large barn on fire and began to hose down the building to contain the flames.

Because the barn was located in a rural area, crews needed to shuttle water from a hydrant about three-and-a-half miles away from the barn.

One resident was taken to a hospital for a medical emergency unrelated to the fire.

Crews managed to get the fire under control by 4:30 a.m. and they stayed at the scene until 7 a.m. to extinguish remaining hotspots.

No injuries were reported among firefighters or individuals but three horses and a pony were unable to escape the barn and died.

Fire officials don’t believe the fire to be suspicious but the cause was unclear. Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts is investigating the fire.
