Meet Myesha McCaskill: ‘Chicago’s Best Roller Skating Guru’ takes her talents citywide

A woman was recently named "Chicago's Best Roller Skating Guru" and she is bringing her ministry to new parts of Chicago.

If you ever wanted to learn how to roller skate but didn't get around to it, it isn't too late.

A Chicago woman is leading a movement to teach people of all ages to get moving on eight little wheels.

"I've been skating since I was 10 years old," said Myesha Demiah McCaskill. "My cousin skated. My mom skated back in the day. I just used it as a form of stress relief."

Decades later and now a master of the art, McCaskill, 40, said she saw an uptick in roller skating popularity during COVID, as a form of therapy.

"Out of COVID, it's been a lot of different opportunities for our skate culture," she said.

McCaskill, who goes by the nickname "Smooth Goddess," has traveled the world on eight wheels, participating in skate jams in places like London, Barcelona and Canada.

"All the stuff that I learned, there was no purpose of me learning the information and not sharing it with the world," she said.

Sharing it she is.

Chicago Magazine just named her "Chicago's Best Roller Skating Guru," and she's expanded the reach of her skate classes from the South Loop, to the downtown and North Center neighborhoods.

"Anyone can come and just learn the art of roller skating with no barriers, no narratives, just enjoy yourself," said McCaskill. "It works the whole entire body. It's for the elderly, for the young people, for people in their 20s and 30s, it works the whole entire body. Some people come not just to learn the tricks, they just come for cardio."

'Smooth Goddess' leads skate classes throughout the city each week.
