SOUTH HOLLAND, Illinois - An off-duty Palos Hills police officer fatally shot a man who opened fire at a family reunion in South Holland Saturday night, and residents were shocked.
A South Holland official said that a dispute arose between a man, and his current and former girlfriend at Maicach Park. The man and his current girlfriend left, then returned, and the official said the man fired shots.
He didn't hit anyone, but the off-duty officer from Palos Hills who happened to be there returned fire and wounded the man. He later died from his injuries.
A family reunion had been taking place at the park along 165th Street since early afternoon. Fifty people were in attendance.
Several shell casings were seen on the ground.
Andriana Foster, who attended the gathering, said they were all having a good time prior to gun shots sounding.
Police said no innocent bystanders were struck.
Police sources tell FOX32 there was possibly a gun switch attached to the weapon used by the offender which would convert the weapon to fully automatic. The weapon was recovered at the scene. The off-duty officer involved was not injured. Police continue to investigate this case.
