Three teens were shot, one fatally, Wednesday night at a beach in Evanston, according to Evanston police.

Northwestern University issued a shelter-in-place order Wednesday night after three people were shot – one fatally – at a nearby Evanston beach.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Evanston police responded to a call of shots fired at Clark Street Beach, which is just south of the Northwestern campus.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located three male victims. Jacquis Irby, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A 15-year-old was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, and another 15-year-old sustained a minor gunshot wound.

According to the school, the suspects fled north toward the campus after the shooting. Police say the two offenders that fled on foot eventually drove away in a vehicle.

Neither of the suspects are in custody, police said, but the area is secure.

Police say the shooting does not appear to be a random act.

The gunshot victims were not students of Northwestern University, police said.

Due to the shooting investigation, Sheridan Road was closed from Davis Street to Clark Street.

The shelter-in-place was lifted around 10 p.m.

No further information was immediately available.
