3 Ogle County deputies shot in Dixon standoff; suspect identified

DIXON, Ill. - Three Ogle County sheriff's deputies were shot at a home in Dixon Wednesday morning during a standoff. The suspect, who was also wounded, has been identified. 

The incident began around 8:39 a.m. after the suspect's mother notified the authorities her adult son was reportedly threatening homicide and suicide at their home in the 400 block of Wild Rice Lane. 

An emergency response team was activated and at 9:18 a.m., 18 minutes after deputies arrived, SWAT was also called to the scene. 

Authorities dialed the suspect's phone over 50 times, but they received no answer. At 11:51 a.m., due to the lack of communication with the suspect, authorities decided to enter the home. 

Inside the home, the suspect, identified as Jonathon G. Gounaris, was armed with multiple guns, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray and ballistic armor, according to the sheriff's office.

Immediately, when authorities went inside the home, they were struck by gunfire and injured. 

One deputy was shot in their armor, another was shot in the upper arm and the third deputy was shot in the face, the sheriff's office said. 

They returned fire and struck Gounaris, according to the sheriff's office. 

All three deputies and the suspect were taken to local hospitals for their injuries. 

As of Wednesday evening, two of the deputies were released from the hospital and the third was flown to OSF St. Anthony's Hospital and underwent surgery. 

Gounaris was also taken to an area hospital and also underwent surgery. 

The Ogle County State's Attorney's Office will determine the charges that will be filed against Gounaris. The investigation continues.
