GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A teen on the Parkview High School soccer team passed away Saturday before a scrimmage with his club team, according to his coach.
Michael Jones, 16, died of apparent cardiac arrest during warmups in a morning practice session with the Atlanta Fire United club team, according to officials. When paramedics arrived to a Cumming soccer field, CPR was already in progress.
Forsyth County Fire medics transported Jones to Northside Hospital Forsyth in critical condition, but he did not survive.
"When I got the news from a friend of mine, I was shocked because a 16-year-old, you don't expect that to happen and if you guys could see him play, you would never have thought this kid would've passed away this way. I'm still in shock," said Parkview High School coach Danny Klinect.
Jones was a rising Junior on the varsity soccer team at Parkview. His name remains posted above his locker as the team remembers him.
"He was always trying to be the best and he wasn't the tallest guy on team, but he had the biggest heart and he made up for it by just outworking everybody," said Klinect. "You know, he's the kind of kid you want to be a focal point of your team."
Coach Klinect said he was not sure if Jones had any underlying health issues.
AFU officials had a moment of silence in honor of Jones at all of the club’s Super Y games on Sunday.
