CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A suspected robber was shot Friday morning on the South Side after a Chicago Police fugitive task force tracked him down, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

The man was wanted for a holdup and a parole violation, said Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

Officers had set up surveillance near 119th and Sangamon, but the man spotted them and ran, Guglielmi said.

He pulled a gun, and an officer fired several times at him about 9:20 a.m., striking the man in the lower abdomen. The suspect dropped the gun and tried to run again, but collapsed.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized after surgery, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating, which it does in every police-involved shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days to “ensure separation from field duties while training and fitness for duty requirements can be conducted,” a statement from police said. “Going forward, this will be standard protocol following all officer-involved shootings.”
