Chicago police provide update after officer-involved shooting

A Chicago police officer was involved in a shooting Sunday on the citys South Side.

A Chicago police officer shot an armed offender Sunday afternoon on the city's South Side.

Shortly before 3 p.m., police were called to investigate a stolen Tesla in the 7400 block of S. Hoyne Ave. When officers arrived at the scene, the armed offender exited the vehicle and fled on foot, according to police.

A chase ensued, and police say the offender turned back toward officers with a gun in his hand. An officer then opened fire on the offender who was struck in the leg.

No shots were fired at the officers, police said.

At the scene, police say a gun with an extended magazine was recovered.

The offender – a man in his 20s who has been previously arrested – was transported to Christ Hospital in good condition. The officer was taken to an area hospital for observation, but is said to be in good condition as well.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. The officer who fired their weapon will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days, per department policy.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can send anonymous tips to CPDtip.com.
